Project Description: Tanzania has witnessed significant improvement in maternal and child indicators including reduction of under-five mortality (DHS,2015). Despite the improvement, maternal and neonatal mortality, maternal and under five years anemia and under-five stunting have remained unacceptably high. Based on Tanzania demographic and health survey conducted in Tanzania, maternal mortality has increased from 454 per 1000 live births in 2010 to 556 per 1000 in 2015. Tanzania has witnessed significant improvement in maternal and child indicators including reduction of under-five mortality (DHS,2015). In addition, prevalence of maternal anaemia has increased from 40% in 2010 to 45% among women of reproductive age (15-49 years). While the prevalence of anaemia is high, recent assessment indicates that uptake of iron and folic acid supplements for 90% among women of reproductive age was very low (28.5%) (TTNS,2018). Among children under five, anaemia prevalence remains high 58% and stunting is at 34.4% and low birth weight is at 7% (DHS, 2015). Nutrition deficiencies are also in high in Mbeya region where nearly 34% of children are currently stunned and anaemia was 55.3%(TTNS, 2018). The primary objective of this project is to provide guidance and generate evidence for strengthening maternal health and nutrition programs in Tanzania. The study conducted in Mbeya Region.
